The New MichaelBraun.me
After spending a lot of time trying to figure out how to use software to produce a decently looking website, I finally gave up and used iWeb. Part of the problem was complicated software that I didn’t feel like spending much time with, like DreamWeaver. Open source versions were too confusing as well. And my efforts to actually program with HTML made me realize how very little I knew. iWeb proved a great compromise. It allowed me some design flexibility, but also exported HTML that was not too complicated, meaning I could make small tweaks by myself.
Now the question: what is the point of a professional website? That’s something I don’t yet have an answer for. Part of the benefit is the ability to link to my blog (or at least a variant of it, sans lots of past posts). I can do that by installing WordPress on that domain and then use an RSS importer to import these posts, without the liability of past posts (including those that are against religion, et cetera). Especially as it’s part of a professional website, those past posts seem less appropriate than most of my writing these days.
Who should go to my professional website? I would like to have business cards complete with my personal website. That way, I can network and include an easy place for people to find information on me. It also means that I can use the domain for students, in case I need to send out a large file or something else. The fact that I can’t give a good answer to this question perhaps points to the limited utility of a website. But it’s been a fun putting something together, especially after spending quite awhile finding something satisfying.
