Young People – We Can Be The Base!!
I’m not sure who defined the word “base” in the political lexicon, but I do know how Bush and McCain use it. When they refer to the political base, they mean a select group of people, driven to vote largely for one party over another, that can be mobilized to vote and swing a close election. For the Republicans, this “base” has been Evangelical Christians. And while this specific base is unlikely to make a difference in this election (the race is not close enough), there is another group, breaking hard for Obama, that can make a big difference in this election.
Young People – we can become the base of the Democratic Party! After Bush was pushed over the top by Evangelical Christians, he pandered to them like no other group (except maybe for big business). Against all logic, he came out strong against so many social issues, while many other important matters occupied our nation. If young people come out and send Obama to a big victory, we can be the group getting the favors.
I believe that those issues that matter to young people will make our society stronger as a whole. Imagine if the important issues of the day centered around providing support for higher education. We’d get more people in college, better education once there, and a lot of educated people to generate new ideas and new jobs. Return On Investment for education is very high! Imagine what issues would not be important – banning gay marriage, flag burning amendments, abortion restriction. The government could get out of our lives and provide support where it’s needed!
And once young people have been shown to be a powerful base, we can get other politicians to listen. Conservative Evangelical Christians, no friend to John McCain, got him to pick a disastrous running mate, simply because they were the base that Bush had depended on. Young people can do the same by demanding intelligent, socially progressive individuals for office. A running mate can promote policies that are MORE liberal than the candidate, rather than the other way around. We can push our agenda and make our nation stronger!
The solution is simple: if you are a young person, GET OUT AND VOTE. It is more important for you to vote than it is for any other group. Politicians expect old people to vote, but they do not expect young people to turn out in droves. If you are fired up about the election, VOTE! If you don’t want 4 more years of failed policy, VOTE! If you want someone to listen to you, you must vote.
Please, vote November 4 to make a real difference for our age group, and more importantly, for the nation. Young people can lead by voting on November 4.
