Response to Undecided Voters

Even though this election has gone on for a very long time now, there are still voters who remain undecided. For whatever reason, they have not yet heard enough information to make up their minds. I want to tackle the reasons why they have not yet decided one way or another (as well as offer arguments for my candidate of choice).

1. “Who is the real Barack Obama?”
If you are asking this, you fell right into McCain’s trap. He sought to raise uncertainty in your mind about a candidate who has been campaigning for 20 months now. Barack Obama also gave a widely covered speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, where he sought to unite the nation, rather than divide it. Now, on the campaign trail, he has refused to use wedge issues to drive voters to the polls for him, unlike the McCain/Palin/Bush ticket. If you still don’t think you “know” Barack Obama, ask yourself – what information would make a difference? If you can identify something specifically, seek it out! If you can’t, then you have fallen prey to McCain’s political strategy (or is it a tactic?).

2. The two candidates are both great men.
Maybe. Only one of the candidates owns 8 houses, 13 cars, and is a multi-millionaire, with all the money coming from his wife and her connections with the booze industry. Only one candidate used his political power to get himself into highly selective military schools, despite dismal grades. Only one candidate has big ties to Washington and has been an insider for decades. Only one candidate has a family history of power and wealth. That candidate is John McCain. If you want the American dream, only Barack Obama has lived it, coming from humble roots. Barack Obama understands the middle class because it’s in his background. John McCain understands it like reading about about a foreign culture in a textbook.

3. No candidate will bring real change to Washington.
This may be true; we won’t know until we elect one of them. But one candidate has been a Washington insider since the 1980s. John McCain has been a part of the Washington establishment for a long time. While he may have “maverick” credentials, he has voted with Bush 92% of the time. He has a long record with few grand achievements. If we want someone who will change the tone, it’s Barack Obama. If you want someone who will change himself to get elected, it’s John McCain who has shifted nearly all his positions to fit with the failed policies of the Republican party.

4. John McCain may be like Bush, but Obama is nothing but words.
It’s unfortunate that we’ve had, for the past 8 years, one of the worst Presidents to inspire the American people. With ample opportunity to give speeches that would inspire Americans to make this country great again, he told us to go shopping. We’ve had many great presidents in the past who were also great speakers. Does anyone criticize JFK for being a great speaker? Of course not. We, instead, look to him as one of the visionary leaders who made this country strong. John McCain might do that, but he won’t be able to inspire the nation to action with speech. Barack Obama can lead with action and with words. It’s vital to have both.

Undecided voters will need to make up their minds soon enough. The election is just 6 days away. I urge those voters to vote for the original candidate for change. Barack Obama was calling for things to be different before we got into this mess in Iraq. He wanted regulation before the financial meltdown. He wanted to bring change to Washington and the world. That’s why he ran for Senate. That’s why he spent his young years as a Community Organizer, helping poor people on Chicago’s South Side. That’s why he returned to Chicago after graduating at the top of his class from Harvard Law. He wants to serve this nation and make it great again.
