Let The Summer Begin
Saturday, July 5th, 2008Thursday was my last day at work; as of around 2:30, July 3, 2008, I became unemployed (that is, until I start school in the fall). So far, this unemployment has been relatively anti-climactic. That’s what happens when you leave at the end of the week, leading into a holiday weekend. Monday will be my first actual day off. I will get up in the morning, drink my coffee while watching people drive to work. I’ll be back with them someday, but for the next couple of years, it will be onto the bus for me, off to the classroom.
As a usual part of leaving a company, I was subject to an “exit interview” in which I was asked the usual kinds of questions – what did you like about your job, what did you not like, what are you doing next, why did you decide to leave, why did you decide to leave NOW, who was doing well, who was struggling, how would you rate your boss, et cetera. Overall, the whole thing took approximately 15 minutes. I didn’t find the process especially enlightening, which is unfortunate. I’ve never known a company to be more secretive with their hiring process. Of course, I’ve never known a company to hire an English major into a technical position, so overall, their hiring practices seem quite unorthodox.
My summer goals begin on Monday. I will try to get up and exercise right away, hopefully by running to the YMCA, lifting weights, and then running back. If I hope to gain weight, I need to get on track. Lauren sent me an interesting article she found, all about how skinny guys can gain weight. In short, I have to eat more – a lot more. The article had some good suggestions for how to accomplish this (olive oil, whole milk, rice and pasta), so I will try to put those into effect. The most frustrating thing is that I like what I eat now (largely healthy, low calorie foods). So eating differently and weight lifting on a regular schedule should put me on the path to success!
Also on the docket are creative goals. I’d like to start writing regularly and doing more things with music. Finding time to accomplish these goals is the biggest obstacle. It helps to get out of the house, so that’s the plan.
Anyway, whatever this summertime season is bring you – best of luck! Hopefully you have at least been enjoying this fourth of July weekend.
