Wii Fit Arrives!
Sitting right now, in the trunk of my car, is the gaming release of the year for Lauren and me. Since being announced at last year’s E3, we have been salivating for its release. Wii Fit, we feel, is a surefire hit.
I arrived at Target this morning shortly after 8, hoping that they would have it stocked and ready for sale. To my happiness, I saw two people carrying the 2 foot long box out of the store. Walking in, I was further cheered to see a woman carrying three, though also concerned that they might be running out. My shoes slapping the floor, I made my way back to the electronics area. They had an entire endcap dedicated to the game, dozens of boxes. I took one and immediately walked towards the registers. Interestingly enough, they also had some Wiis they were putting in the case. Target hasn’t had any Wiis for weeks, at least not when I’ve been there.
The box is heavy, furthering my expectations that Wii Fit is truly a quality product. I am looking forward to taking it out, slapping some batteries in, and starting the game up. It will be a thrill to stand on that board and have it record my movements on screen.
Obviously, I’m not yet sure if I will tire of the game itself. It seems like the perfect exercise game, and I do enjoy exercise, but it might not be enough to keep me coming back every day. But I do think that the hardware itself will last. How long can it be before we have a truly competitive skiing or snowboarding game? SSX Wii, anyone? How about a skateboarding game where you lift your front foot and push down with your back to do an ollie? Perhaps you have to lower your hand, while holding the WiiMote to perform a trick? What a thrill that would be! How about a first person shooter where you rock on the board to move around the area? Regular sports games could benefit as well – don’t use a joystick, use the fitness board!
I will keep you updated on how amazing the game is, once I’ve actually unpacked it and played. The end of the work day cannot come soon enough!

I’m looking forward to hearing your impressions. Jim was planning on buying a copy, but one of the recent software updates rendered his Wii inoperable, so there will be no Wii Fit around here in the foreseeable future.
