We’ve Got Five Years
Wednesday, March 19th, 2008Or rather, we had five years, now squandered on a wasteful and needless war in Iraq. With nearly 4,000 US service members and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed, we’re no closer to a stable government in Iraq than we were when our shock and awe rained down upon them. We tried to rein in the insurgents, but they rebelled against our reign and now we’re still trapped in one hell of a storm.
Five years ago today, I was home in Mishicot during my first ever college spring break. I had the television on and watched the Bagdad skyline light up with the force of our American Way and Divine Right to Rule. As children played in the streets the day before, we begun a terror-fueled nightmare ride for all Iraqis, and in the process, got ourselves involved in the largest American-made quagmire since the Vietnam War. It’s sickening to think of little things have changed since the late 1960s. We have continually failed to learn from mistakes in our past.
There are protests planned for today throughout the country and world. I would like to be at the one around the Capital in Washington D.C. Has any reader seen it in person? Is it as massive as I would hope? While I doubt there is any chance that the status quo will change until war-monger Bush is send packing, we still need to take to the streets to let the government know how we feel.
End the war!
