I Will Not Be Spending $400
Alas, while Apple’s announcement was no doubt exciting to many people, I found myself disappointed at the end.
Yes, the iPod nano will now play video! And the shuffle is available in cool new colors. And there’s a huge capacity iPod, renamed the iPod classic, holding 160 GB! And, of course, the new iPod touch, with an interface like the iPhone, and Wi-Fi, which I had predicted wouldn’t be available. I was wrong about what Apple wouldn’t do. It’s not that they wouldn’t release an iPod with Wi-Fi and all that, it was that they wouldn’t release one fancy iPod with huge storage capacity either. The iPod touch comes in two sizes – 8 and 16 GB. That’s more than the iPhone, which now only comes in an 8 GB version. But it’s still not even close to the iPod classic, or to the iPod I had hoped for.
I understand why they did it. If the iPod touch had every feature that the iPhone did, except for the phone, and it had way more storage capacity, the appeal of a phone would not have been enough to get regular people to go out and buy an iPhone. Plus, the iPhone has had its price cut by $200 (which is huge in itself), making it much more considerable for a lot of people. In fact, if the iPhone were available with my current carrier, I might even consider getting an iPhone the next time my plan is up.
When the announcement was first made yesterday about the capacity of the iPod touch, I was disappointed. But now, I feel relieved. I really had settled on buying the touch-screen iPod, so now it’s like having $400 extra dollars in my pocket. I’ve gone and withdrawn that money from the bank and will be heading to the casino after work. With any luck, that one spin on the roulette wheel will make me a millionaire!

The battery is dying on my current mp3 player, and I’ve actually been thinking about getting some sort of iPod variant. While the capacity is a bit disappointing, the real problems I see are that it takes two hands to operate and it doesn’t seem like you can easily pause tracks or adjust volume without taking it out of your pocket.

I had read the two handed complaint on a forum somewhere and agree whole-heartedly. For me, the most annoying times for that would be while in the car and while running. I don’t want to have to look at the screen to pause the music.
The nice thing is that the iPod Classic still looks great and with it’s super-high capacity and low price seems like a really good deal right now.
