The Bible is Fascinating!

I look forward to reading my bible everyday. I really do! It is a fascinating text. Not only are the stories and logic very interesting, but what I really look forward to is trying to understand how, out of all the words of Jesus came a powerful religion. There are some things I don’t get.

1) Who is actually going to go to heaven? Jesus spends a lot of time laying out who is going to heaven and who isn’t. If you deny Jesus in front of someone, you go to hell. But if you blaspheme Jesus, you are forgiven. But not if you blaspheme the Holy Spirit; in that case, you go to hell. Confused yet? Jesus says many will try to enter heaven but few will get in. Do you think you are going to heaven? If so, how can you be so confident?

2) For being the Son of Man, Jesus is really a pompous ass. He and I don’t share the same leadership strategies. I try to live my life as an example. I’m not going to tell anyone else how to live their life. You do drugs, sleep around, get drunk – hey, it’s okay by me. Your choices are your choices. And when I screw up (frequently) I try to make things right. Doesn’t always work out, but I try my best. But Jesus goes around telling other people how to live ALL THE TIME! Seems ineffective to me.

3) Luke 9: 62 “Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” My interpretation is that if you question or doubt Jesus or God, you are going to hell. So if things are going bad in your life and you question your faith in God, you are not going to get into heaven. That’s a tough prescription to take.

4) Where does it say and when and how that Jesus dying means we are now forgiven? Haven’t found that yet from Jesus’ words at least.

There’s other stuff too, but I’m just getting started really. I’ve read John, now onto Luke, then to Acts and Romans. Then I want to hit up the Jewish Bible (Old Testament). It’s really good reading, and I find myself ready and willing to take on other people. Anyone want to join a bible study with me?
