Post Party
Sunday, April 23rd, 2006Alright, so it wasn’t the party of the century. First off, being only pre-bar, how much could we have expected? But when not a lot of people come, I think it’s a sign that your true friends do show up. And I can honestly say that the people who came to our apartment were there because they liked us, not for drinks, not for music, but for company. That made the evening a lot of fun. And the drinks were (apparently) very good. And the music, of course, was incredible.
I’ve got a group project due on Thursday, a presentation of one of the works that we read for my Asian American Women Writers class. Now, the groups that went last Thursday mostly read off PowerPoint slides or notecards, making the presentations quite lackluster. While staring at these presentations, I wrote a note to Steph (friend of mine, also in my group) that we should record a song for our presentation. She seemed to like the idea. Then I got an even crazier notion and said we should not only make a song, but also a movie. She liked that idea too. And after panicking a little bit, thinking, what have I got myself into?!, I realized that our presentation could be absolutely amazing, if not for the content, then for the delivery.
So Steph came over this afternoon and we recorded the song. I’d written the lyrics previously, but we still had to make a beat and a hook. Overall, it went quite quickly, and we were done in less than 3 hours. You can download the song here. It’s about a Turkish prostitute named Kuchek Hanem whom French author Flaubert wrote about; it’s somewhat obscure, and you probably won’t get the references, but the song turned out well nonetheless. In fact, we both were really pleased with the results.
I have a paper due next week and an exam Tuesday. So those have been weighing on my mind. I will get some more studying done tomorrow, and I think I will focus largely on the paper tonight. Sure, it’s not due for a while, but the sooner I get it done, the sooner I can think about finals and one more paper. And ACP starts tomorrow! Engineering Mall, free breakfast (also Bascom and Liz Waters). But I’ll be at Engineering Mall. Come check it out!
