All By Myself
Try as I may and might, I was unable to find someone to go with me to the dumate concert on Saturday. Who is dumate, you ask? Dumate, with lower case ‘d’, is my co-worker Laduma’s Hip Hop group. They are entirely live, consisting of Laduma on mic, and a keyboardist, a bass player, and a drummer. They are also wildly talented, thanks much to the superior verbals skills that Laduma (Mr. Parker) has. He writes great lyrics and delivers them with passion. They are smart like a lot of underground groups, and not about what being mainstream seems to entail today. But that’s another debate.
Laduma had given me all the rough cuts for their upcoming album, and in listening to those, I was bound and determined to make it to one of their shows. Saturday was the most recent. I asked a lot of people if they wanted to go. Dan didn’t want to give up a Saturday, Woodie was going to a homecoming dance with a high school girl he works with (don’t ask), and Anthony’s girlfriend Kristine wanted him to come home, he said he couldn’t because he had to study, and thus said he would feel bad about going out. I called my friend Aaron, but he didn’t answer. I asked my friend Nate, but he was working. Brittany was out of town, and she’s 19. Becky was out of town as well. So I went by myself.
This is the first time I have EVER been out by myself. Were I a drinker, I would worry about having a problem. Instead I stayed at the bar of this very small club, sipping on my tonic and lime juice, and enjoying the two sets that dumate put on. A lot of people ended up there, and people were dancing. There were also a lot of lesbians, which is only worth noting because I never see that out somewhere else. Overall I had a great time. Laduma even stopped to chat with me making me feel very important… well, not really. But it was nice to talk with him. When they finished their second set, I went and said goodbye to him, recieved an invitation to his afterparty, which I sadly declined. It would have been fun had I gone with someone else, but alas, not until next time.
On the way back home, an extremely drunk girl stopped me and asked me to walk her home. I asked her how far, and after some initial reluctance on my part, I agreed. She took my arm and stummbled along next to me. We were having some conversation which mainly consisted of me asking her questions and listening to her loud and repetitive answers. My final question was “How old are you?” She didn’t go to school, but seemed young still. She asked me how old I thought she was. I said, “35.” She said, “are you serious?,” let go of my arm, and started walking the other way. I said, “It was a joke” with a smile in my voice, bade her good night, turned the corner and walked home.
Right now I am busy studying for my Landscape Architecture exam. Yesterday I read one of the articles we were required to read about modern computer technology in the Landscape Arcitecture field. The article was written in 1988. The program they said was most popular is no longer made or supported by the designer. For an ideal set up, the article suggested getting a computer with a hard disk. The article said some day computers will cost as little as “electric typewriters do today.” I e-mailed the TA with my concerns.
I’m at the Health Sciences library, way on the other side of campus (I drove here), and plan to stay for several more hours. Now I just need to stop writing this and get back to studying.

Your description of that article made me laugh out loud.
