A Nighttime Run

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

I have returned, 45 minutes ago, from a run with Woodie. Those of you who know me know that I don’t run often, even though I share the same build and athleticism as my grandfather a veteran of many, many marathons. Running comes easy to me, but I often am unable to push myself to actually get into a routine. This summer, however, with Woodie on a bit of a health blitz, I knew I would have a willing partner to run with.

I asked Woodie if he would like to go for a run around 2045 tonight. He was watching an Audrey Hepburn movie, but around 2105, he came out and said he was ready. I had put the run out of my mind, but sprung into action when he suggested it. We set out five minutes later. We ran down University, turned onto Babcock, down Linden around the bend and to Bradley, our old dorm. Then back, up Observatory, down Charter, over Bascom Hill, back onto University and home. I sprinted the last two blocks. For those of you who do not know campus very well, here is a map.

Returning home, I was tired, breathing heavy, and covered in sweat, but I felt great. My muscles were all loose (though tightening now) and I felt calm and confident. It is very similar to how I feel upon returning from a bike ride. The funny thing is that I feel so good, and yet I still have trouble convincing myself to go. I think the key is routine and someone else to run with. It’s no good to run by yourself; you get bored too easily.

So we will see if I can keep up this running thing. I have proved to myself that I can ride a bike for 40 miles. Maybe now it is time to prove to myself I can run, say, 5 miles. I did around 2 tonight and it wasn’t hard. I need to up that, keep pushing myself, find my limits.

In other news, I went for a lengthy walk today and took 120 or so pictures along the way. A few of them are posted in a NEW photo album available here. I really like these pictures, because they take me to some interesting places on campus that I either haven’t been to before or don’t go to very often. Check them out and let me know what you think.
